The Forestry Services of the Government of Gran Canaria register only one forest fire when five acres were burned during this year’s campaign, which represents the best results in fire fighting for the last 20 years.
This one fire affected 6.5 hectares and is compared with 75 hectares of forest destroyed in 2015, 18 hectares destroyed in 2016 and 1.944 hectares destroyed in 2017, when the great fire of the summit of the island was registered.
The President of the Government of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, said “In recent years a great effort has been made to professionalise the firefighting operational unit, so that it could maintain and empower staff and officials without outsourcing to private companies.”
This has meant that the operation to extinguish forest fires in Gran Canaria is composed almost entirely of its own personnel.
