Scientists in Tenerife have detected the presence of a termite species, native to the centre and south of the United States, capable of causing serious structural damage to buildings, crops, trees and street furniture.
This termite is reported to reproduced with great ease and it is feared that it will affect the historic centres of the island, and its architectural and cultural heritage.
It has not yet been eradicated due to the complexity of this foreign species.
