This week Tenerife celebrated International Day of Transsexual Memory, which originally was established to honour the memory of Rita Hester, an African American trans woman who was murdered in 1998 in the United States. This event moved the compassion of people across the world, and opened people’s eyes to transphobia.
This past year, 370 transgendered people have been murdered through hate crimes, and most of these were trans women.
The Government of Tenerife celebrated the importance of acts for social justice by raising the trans flag on its buildings.
Various groups came together outside the Government offices, and read a manifesto to influence the need for institutions to promote standards that guarantee the safety of all transsexual members of the community.
