A man in Gran Canaria was imprisoned this week to serve a two-year sentence for refusing to demolish part of his home for an offence against the ordination of the territory, or not complying with building regulations and permissions.
The family and friends of the man living in El Salobre in San Bartolome de Tirajana said that he had expanded his home illegally by 40 square metres according to a ruling that the land was classified as rural. He then claimed that he could not afford the cost of the demolition, which amounted to around 24,000 euros.
His family also said that the General Plan for San Bartolome de Tirajana provides the classification of this home as urban, and not rural.
