The Government of Gran Canaria expects to increase by around 10%, the arrival of tourists from the peninsula during the current winter season, which ends in March, compared to the same period last year.
This increase is based on predictions of a new market for tourists from new destinations across Spain, which had already had a record number of tourists from the peninsula in 2018, when it added another 600,000 visitors, and 5 % more than in 2017.
Antonio Morales, President of Gran Canaria said “Gran Canaria is connected with 14 Spanish cities, which will increase to 17 when other cities are added for the coming summer season.”
Morales was speaking at the opening day of the Fitur International Tourism Fair in Madrid, and he emphasised the determining factor in the increased tourism for Gran Canaria was the island’s efforts to boost the arrival of more Spanish tourists. He also said “One of the keys to this good result has been our work of ‘deseasonalising’ tourism.”
The Government of Gran Canaria reported that this was achieved with the support of six airlines, ten conventional tour operators, seven digital operators and three specialised media outlets.”
