117 people were rescued this week by two lifeboat services from an African boat observed 216 kilometres from the south coast of Gran Canaria spotted by an Air Force plane. This pilot sent location details to the maritime rescue service, which quickly despatched boats to rescue these people.
This boat was much larger than the pateras often used by African migrants, and is similar to that used by 95 African migrants that was intercepted on the way to Gran Canaria on 17 October this year, and represents a return to a pattern of these migrant boats that had more or less ceased over recent years.
