The City Council of Teguise in Lanzarote has organised an extensive programme of activities to celebrate 600 years of history as the first capital of the Canary Islands. Teguise Municipality extends in a strip from the east coast to the west coast of Lanzarote, and was a strategic location for shelter from the many attacks by pirates that threatened the local population.
Located on the mountain of Guanapay, stands the fortress of Santa Barbara that served as a watchtower for surveillance, as this has good views across the entire coast.
Teguise grew from the mid-Sixteenth Century to become important as the main institutions of the island were based here, as well as religious centres.
