This week celebrated the sixth Strawberry Fair in the Municipality of Valsequillo in Gran Canaria, when 1500 kilos of strawberries were distributed to the thousands of people who came to sample the fruit from the centre of strawberry growing in the Canary Islands.
Antonio Morales, President of the Government of Gran Canaria and Francisco Atta, Mayor of Valsequillo attended this popular annual event, which attracted visitors from all across the island.
Visitors to this event were also be able to taste specially prepared desserts using locally grown and freshly picked strawberries.
Over recent years, the cultivation of strawberries in the Municipality of Valsequillo has grown by 25%. This municipality is also important as 90% of all strawberry production in the Canary Islands in concentrated in Valsequillo, which are grown in over 36 hectares, and are responsible for a total of 200 directly involved local jobs.
