The President of the Government of El Hierro, Belen Allende, this week blamed the State for irreparable damage to pineapple growers in the Canary Islands due to the illegal introduction of pineapples from other countries through the ports of the archipelago.
El Hierro is the largest producer of pineapples in the Canary Islands with 140 cultivated hectares, and is also one of the main crops on the island. For this reason, the President of the Government said that the lack of control at the borders means that pineapple production is devalued in the market, and that environmental and protection policies towards consumers and users are not met.
