The Guardia Civil this week opened an investigation into the death of a four-year-old boy when part of a palm tree fell on him while he was on a summer camp at CEIP Chano Sanchez del Carrizal in the southeast of Gran Canaria.
According to the initial investigations, everything indicates that this was an accident, and that the part of the palm tree gave way as a consequence of the very strong winds at the time. The City Council of Ingenio confirmed that the state of the tree had been checked a few months ago.
The Municipality of Ingenio decreed two days of mourning and has suspended all planned activities. The International Folklore Festival of Ingenio suspended its musical parades as a sign of respect, but continued with its planned closing concert at Nestor Alamo Park in El Puente.
