The City Council of Tuineje has asked the Fuerteventura Government to support the creation of artificial reefs on the coast of Las Playitas to improve this municipality’s competitiveness to attract tourists. These artificial reefs are intended to attract sport activities for tourists, and the town already has a hotel complex that specialises in beach sport activities.
This centre is thought to be the perfect distance from other tourist centres and could attract other tourists to visit this coastal area. The creation of artificial reefs would make it possible to change from a tourist industry focused on the local landscape to a tourist industry focused on natural resources of the sea.
These artificial reefs could also enhance opportunities for diving at Las Playitas, and widen the interest of divers in other parts of Fuerteventura. The Coucillor for Tourism, Lolina Negrin said “the town of Las Playitas is an ideal centre to take advantage of the natural heritage of the sea environment, which enhances the protection and regeneration of living marine resources, as well as promoting sports activities for tourists”.
