The El Hierro Hospital registered the highest rate of caesarean births in the Canary Islands in 2016, and in 2017, 26 caesarean births were recorded, which account for more than half the total 42 births during the year.
Hospitals in the Canary Islands during 2016 recorded an average of 24.6% caesarean births, but in El Hierro this exceeded 40% of births.
El Hospital Insular Nuestra Señora de Los Reyes responded this week to this high rate of caesarean births in 2016, and maintained that these figures are anecdotal, and do not constitute a tendency or policy for the hospital, but in 2017 the hospital admits that of a total of 42 birth deliveries, 26 or over half were completed with caesarean sections.
