This week saw a demonstration along Las Canteras Beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria against the ‘turistification’ of the city. Around 50 people came together to protest against the effects of holiday rentals in the city that prevents local people being able to afford rental properties, which have also occurred in many other cities across Spain.
A collective called ‘A Neighbourhood to Live’ created by the Ben Magec Ecologists in Action Federation and the Tenants Union group had mobilised this demonstration to highlight the problems of finding affordable accommodation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which they describe as almost impossible.
This demonstration wanted to convey the message that vocational rentals are expelling residents from their neighbourhoods.
